Keyword density is an indicator of the number of times the selected keyword appears in the web page. But mind you, keywords shouldn’t be over used, but should be just sufficient enough to appear at important places.

If you repeat your keywords with every other word on every line, then your site will probably be rejected as an artificial site or spam site.

Keyword density is always expressed as a percentage of the total word content on a given web page.

Suppose you have 100 words on your webpage (not including HMTL code used for writing the web page), and you use a certain keyword for five times in the content. The keyword density on that page is got by simply dividing the total number of keywords, by the total number of words that appear on your web page. So here it is 5 divided by 100 = .05. Because keyword density is a percentage of the total word count on the page, multiply the above by 100, that is 0.05 x 100 = 5%

The accepted standard for a keyword density is between 3% and 5%, to get recognized by the search engines and you should never exceed it.

Remember, that this rule applies to every page on your site. It also applies to not just to one keyword but also a set of keywords that relates to a different product or service. The keyword density should always be between 3% and 5%.

Simple steps to check the density:
• Copy and paste the content from an individual web page into a word-processing software program like Word or Word Perfect.
• Go to the ‘Edit’ menu and click ‘Select All’. Now go to the ‘Tools’ menu and select ‘Word Count’. Write down the total number of words in the page.
• Now select the ‘Find’ function on the ‘Edit’ menu. Go to the ‘Replace’ tab and type in the keyword you want to find. ‘Replace’ that word with the same word, so you don’t change the text.
• When you complete the replace function, the system will provide a count of the words you replaced. That gives the number of times you have used the keyword in that page.
• Using the total word count for the page and the total number of keywords you can now calculate the keyword density.

Yahoo has recently acquired IndexTools – A Web Analytics Technology Company. The move seems to be one of those that can help them stay away from Microsoft acquisition. Yahoo has been my personal favorite since long, since when Google didn’t existed. The first website that I opened on Internet as a kid was Yahoo. Although I like Google for its search results and some other useful products like Google Analytics, Yahoo has been the first choice for all other domain needs.

The acquisition of IndexTools means that Yahoo now has access to ready made web analytics technology that can be used in number of ways. The most obvious is the web analytics tool like Google Analytics. They can offer it for free with some improvements in the programme, so that it can compete with Google. They can charge a nominal fee and provide some unprecedented features. Small and Medium Businesses can afford to pay nominal fee rather than paying thousands of dollars.

If Yahoo does not want to do anything, they can just sell the existing IndexTools products with the Yahoo Logo on it. IndexTools has two different versions: E-Business and Enterprise. Yahoo can offer the E-Business version free while charging for Enterprise version.

Well, I am not the authority to say anything on how Yahoo is going to treat IndexTools, but this is just what I can think of. Yahoo may come up with different solution all together, but it is for sure that they have to improve the product to compete Google in this area. They have to come up with a break through that can save them from Microsoft.

Let me in comments, what new web analytics features you would like to see…

It’s good to see this step from Google, as there were many discussing this take over as the end of SEO Companies. On techcrunch it was something like, Google Now Selling SEO Services Via Performics. According to Mr. Phillips, Google does not want to be in the search engine marketing business as it is an obstacle in Google’s mission.

It is still not sure who is going to buy Search Marketing Unit of Performics, they have received preliminary interest from their current partners. They have made it clear that, “Search Marketing will continue to run as a separate entity until the division is sold”.

It seems Google Webmaster Team is on the roll with some very remarkable updates. In my last post about Google Webmaster Tools, I have announced a very useful updated about sitelinks, code search sitemap and historical keyword data. Well, they are back with another update - Now it is possible to tell Google to associate your site with a specific country. This will help sites in the niche market fighting for Local Share. This country specific control can be applied to a domain, a sub-domain or a particular directory on your site.

The location can be set in Google Webmaster >> Tools >> Set Geographic Target. If the site is targeted towards specific state or region within the country then its possible to set this state or region as well. If the geographic target is not set, Google will determine the location through two different ways:

Google can determine the geographic location of the site through its domain, e.g. domainname.ru would be considered a Russian site.

Google considers the country where the site is hosted to determine the location of the site through IP, e.g. if your site is hosted in Canada, it will be given preference in Google.ca.

Google Webmaster Central was updated last week with some pretty new features. The update was needed in order to give more information to webmasters and site owners. Now here is the new features that were rolled out.

Webmasters always wondered how Google can show different sitelinks under some of the websites results. It was for sure that Google was showing this sitelinks for Authority sites only and webmasters guessed that Google would decide which links to show.

Now Webmasters have control on what links to show under the sitelinks. This will facilitate the site owners to decide which links are more important and which links can be shown to visitors in the search engine.

The other functionality that has been added is the inclusion of Code Search Sitemaps. It is possible now to submit the sitemap specific to Public Source Code that is hosted on your site. Isn’t it cool to have all your pages indexed and rank in Code Search??

The Top Search Queries Section under the heading Statistics in Webmaster Tools now can show you the old data. It is highly possible that your site content changes and you rank for new keywords that has not been targeted before. So now you can compare your performance with old keywords and decide which keywords would fetch you more traffic. The data can be downloaded as well.
